The Adventures of Now

exploring the mix of fun, fitness & health…as a diabetic

Thanks for taking a moment to check out my blog.

I’m Whitney, I’m a 26-year-old girl living in NYC.

Oh and I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic since I was 3 & 1/2.

Aware of health & wellness since I can remember, it’s something that I’m always challenging to improve and strengthen. After years of reading nutrition labels, I’m working to incorporate a balance of whole foods. A growing runner & inspired by the healthy living blogworld I’ve decided that I want a pretty 26.2 medal too!

Meaning, I’ve decided to run the 2012 NYC Marathon in support of Team for Kids {your support would mean a lot!}. There is no before or after story for me – not yet anyways- but  there will be many running stories to come.

So what’s with the Adventures? Am I one to jump of cliffs and do extreme sports? Not exactly. Actually, highly unlikely. But I often refer to experiences as adventures. During study abroad in ’07 (so long ago!) I adopted the motto “No expectations, no disappointments.” For my flatmates it became our cheer as we’d explored the city and embarked on adventures. For my friends back home it became a “Whitney thing” said with a smile and perhaps an eye roll. I’m curious by nature and being open to “adventures” {even the small things like a new coffee shop} is my way of embracing life.

And the Now part?

How often have you put something off to wait for the right moment? Wait until Monday to start a new diet (so you can binge over the weekend). Or to start a new workout (weekends are for relaxing right?).  Maybe you put of writing that thank you/love/condolence letter.

It’s easy to say tomorrow, but when does tomorrow truly come?

It’s not just about the things that you should or need to be doing, it’s about the fun you could be having. I am one of those that wait…….and wait. And miss out. So this is my declaration to stop reflecting on the past and waiting for the future and to enjoy the “now”. These moments, these opportunities & these adventures.

Breaking out of the comfort zone, putting action behind my words.  I’ve done enough self-reflection, this is about holding myself accountable and hopefully documenting some memories along the way {I was never very good at keeping a journal...}

 Anything else ?

  • I taught children’s yoga throughout college. Started taking classes with adults in high school but have a lot of poses to work on.
  • I’m a magazine junkie.
  • I can get seriously passionate…about many things.
  • I’m super empathetic.
  • I’m addicted to Pinterest
  • Coffee makes me happy. So does 16Handles.
