4th Fun

Look I made something! Yes, it’s a simple summer fruit salad but I was highly proud of my efforts. I even had mint randomly in my fridge (what possessed me to buy it – I have no clue). By the way, that package of cherries was the best I’ve ever had – I’ll probably be headed back to the store tomorrow to get more. It also made me wish I had a cherry pitter. Inspired by this tip I used a straw … that lasted for about 5 cherries.  Silly thing is, I have chopsticks that would have worked. Oh well, it left more for me to eat.

I brought the fruit to a BBQ in Brooklyn … melted before getting on the subway but was able to pull myself together. Sort of.  Toto, we are most definitely in Williamsburg, pretty sure my blue floral H&M dress and I were not hip enough for this party. It was also probably a good thing that my hair was in a topnot because the lack of a haircut in over a year would probably given all of those hair stylists a heart attack.  But I love meeting new people and it was good to catch up with my cousin.

Plus I was introduced to this amazing invention …. how did I not know about this?

It will be bought today. And it better work.

Wednesday was a prescribed rest day. Apparently it was a sleep in day too as I totally ignored my alarms and slept until past 10am. When I was out getting  fruit I saw people out for their run and got a little sad – I felt left out that I wasn’t getting a workout in. But then I remembered that I did two yoga classes and 4 miles the day before …. a rest day was more than ok.  What wasn’t ok to skip was foam rolling, my right hamstring & glute has been adding up (oh yay, another one to add to the injury list) and while I’m not too sure where it came from I would like to make it go away….asap. So I got patriotic with my stick and a little massage therapy, also paying plenty of attention to my calves.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th!

{Weekend Recap} : Actively Eating & Outdoor Fun

Saturday morning started off bright & early at 8am. It was my third year doing the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women in honor of a friend’s mom.  While there were a few runners in our group, the rest of us took the opportunity to slow down to a casual stroll and chat.

We ended it with the annual BBQ which included “flip flip scrabble cup” and break out dance routines :

After picking out horses (I took Take Charge Indy – it sounded powerful….and I had 2 seconds to decide)  I switched from Derby to Cinco de Mayo :

Pinata Baseball on the rooftop leaded to jumping pictures … we weren’t very good at them.  Someone made delicious cupcakes with lemon zest – perfect recovery fuel for a < 3.1 mile walk.

…………..

Sunday was the first UGS/Athelta group run of the Spring season. Over 90 girls showed up!! I recognized some faces from the fall and there were a ton of new ones. I was really impressed with how the event was organized and even noticed little ways they improved from last year (raffle ticket inside of the goody bag? Brilliant! Sometimes it’s the simplest things).

I was hesitant at first to even go because of my hip & all the silly injuries but figured I could stick with the beginners and always drop down to walkers. With indirect peer pressure I ended up jumping in the intermediate group at the last-minute – a loose estimate of 9:30 min mile.

There was so many of us that even the intermediate group broke down into 3 groups. I ended up running with 5 girls and by the end started dragging in the bag – hip wasn’t too happy,  not to mention I was feeling the few weeks off from any cardio. But it was a good run & I’m glad I went.  During the group stretch I stepped away to do a blood test … so skipped stretching my first run back – way to go for injury prevention.

RunKeeper lied again so I didn’t get stats but we ran for 39:40 minutes and I think the coach said 10:15 min mile pace … something between 3.5 – 4 miles.

I then rushed to met a friend for brunch at Elmo‘s, shopping & The High Line.

Living in the UES I don’t visit it often and it was cool to see how much it’s expanded since I last went. Need to venture over there more often.

I over-corrected for brunch and ended up going low as we were heading back …which totally calls for 16 Handles. I tried the Greek Honey Yogurt flavor  – I’ll be sticking to Birthday Cake (my fav) & Blueberry (that makes it healthier right?).

Lots of friends, activities & carbs – the perfect weekend.

I’m in control of the office TV today – we’re watching ABC Family Christmas movies.

In my defense I was looking for Elf – instead we’re watching Holiday in Handcuffs

Working the Holiday Spirit

Whew. This week has had a lot going on.
And none of it involved exercise.
Which may be why my body is begging for a yoga class
(…or two…or three)
and a good sweat cardio session.

Part of all the activity has been various fanfare of holiday arrangements at work.
Client Gifts.
500 of them hand wrapped. With bows. And cards. And labels.
Company Holiday Party.
RSVP list. Venue guidance. Coordination.
What to wear?!

I wanted sparkles.
I mean isn’t that partly what holiday parties are all about??

{pinterest}

But after a very brief shopping expedition after late nights at the office I decided on this LBD from H&M – it looked good, it felt good…and I’d use it a million times over

 done deal!

{iPhone}
Plus, the sparkles come in from the belt (that I wore with a LBD last year …. hey if the formula works…) and bling it out with some new earrings. Even sticking with basic black heels. I’m a champ at rushed shopping panics and buying quick cheap things, convincing myself that they work. I didn’t want more stuff that I’d never wear again.
Going for the fun / no stress look this year.

……

I just had way too many spoonfuls of Chocolate soynut butter.
That’s right : spoonfuls.
The perfect thing to have the night before you wear a super tight LBD.

……

Speaking of indulgence… I’ve only had 1 holiday cookie so far this season.
A co-worker brought it in. It was made by her mom. I had to.
I said I would save it…I saved it for about 5 whole minutes.
I had just finished my oatmeal.

……

Since I seem to be “confessing” … I wore my compression calf sleeves all day today. Did I mention how I haven’t run all week?
My legs are not happy. IT Bands are down right angry.
I have an appointment with my Orthopedic Surgeon. I have lots to discuss with him.
I hope he realizes that PT is not going to fit into the game plan anytime soon.

……

Some how it’s already 10:30pm. I’m ready to pass out.
First time to put on some Krishna Das and do a few light downward dogs so that my legs forgive me when I put on heels tomorrow night.

Recap on Thanksgiving Fun:

There’s only one thing that brings me to Worcester … an amazing friend from my senior year in college. She invited me up for her Friendsgiving celebration, not only were we long overdue for a visit, but her friends and family are just as welcoming and fun as she is. I took Friday off from work (still getting use this whole vacation concept but it was much-needed) and we spent the day indulging in girly activities & party planning. She even found decoration inspiration from P (so proud since I convinced her she had to join – she also joined Instagram after seeing me take pictures – I will turn the gang into social media mavens!)

It was a take-a-break-from-the-city getaway.
Plus I found a cape! In one of those I would have walked right past it unless my friend pointed it out type of way.

Dare I say that the food was even better than my actual Thanksgiving Meal ?

It was most definitely!

It was my second year doing the Montauk Turkey Trot. It’s a total family race (no one wears costumes though! I did see a few hats & shirts…), my stepmom has been doing it for a while & runs it with their dog while my dad cheers us on.

Last year was bitterly cold in the 30s. This year couldn’t have been better – sunny & in the 50s.
I clocked in at 28:56 – a PR!

After the race we stopped by the beach (pretty much required when your parents surf), it was awesome seeing so many people out being active before feasting.

In true #willrunforcoffee spirit, our drive home was a hunt for a coffee place still open. We came across (ok drove past but I made them stop) Jack’s Coffee. I actually worked across the street just after I graduated college, sad that it popped up once I left.

{source}

Not only are they serious about their coffee but the place is awesomely decorated.
Tons of details.

Afterwards, I stopped by to visit with my aunt & cousins and we went for a walk. I got on the skateboard but was not brave enough to have the dog pull me – instead I had my cousin do it! There was a period when I was about 10 maybe that her & I would skateboard after school with her brothers. She was 5. Pretty sure we were both pulled along back than too.

20111129-150329.jpg

My dad makes fun of me for being a NYC’er who wears black all the time (I was in fact wearing all black when I traveled out) but I showed him!
Busted out the fall colors for Thanksgiving.
We had Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant. I’m becoming a fan of this tradition since it’s a small group & we’re all adults. However I wasn’t overly impressed with this place. My parents just did a vegan detox and are adopting a more vegan lifestyle (with tons of flexibility) – the restaurant was owned by the same people who ran the program so they offered a special menu. Nothing caught my eye so I went for the traditional plate : Turkey (eh), mashed potatoes (didn’t even try them), stuffing (the best part – the doughiest I’ve ever had), veggies (over steamed kind). There wasn’t even cranberry sauce! I missed brussel sprouts & sweet potatoes.

Since they forgot our bread basket before hand and everything was nicely portioned out there was no over-indulging. I made up for that the next night …

Funny enough, I used to work across the street from here as well (same company too, just the year before) but always overlooked it. I had no idea it was a vegetarian / vegan restaurant.  There was a bread basket here! Plus warm pita & hummus. I tried scallops for the first time with sautéed spinach, pecans and butternut squash. My dad & I split the vegan carrot cake (my stepmom & I were sorely missing having pie leftovers …she got an apple crumb). I can’t wait to try out more from the menu!

I was feeling the indulgence – I mistakenly wore jeans that night. I was dropped off at my high school best friend’s house since I was crashing with her for the night – I felt like I was 14 again. After we went out for drinks meeting up with my other best friend and our newly engaged friend (!). The was talk about how one who just completed culinary school baked & shared pies …when we got home C & I had one thing in mind – digging in to Tate’s Pumpkin Pie.

I headed back to the city Saturday midday to do some shopping & errands. Meeting up with a friend that evening, I completed my Thanksgiving feasting at Peacefood Cafe. After we split the dumplings (delish!) I got asian pumpkin & brussel sprouts – exactly what had been missing! At first glance the side dish had no hopes of being enough but by the time I finished we had to wait for dessert! Which was gelato from Screme – of course I got pumpkin pie.

So while I haven’t been seeing how many ways I can remix leftovers, I’ve certainly had my fix of culinary delights. And good company!
