Summer Saturday Firsts

I slept until 9:30 on Saturday – the first time not being rudely awaken by my alarm clock before 5:30am all summer.

When I woke up I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself. I knew I’d be meeting a friend for coffee soon enough but we hadn’t set a time.

Gone was the ritual of pre long run.

It was also my first Saturday in August that I was staying in the city.

So what to do when you don’t need to have the usual toast & PB and have some spare time?

Cook pancakes for the first time in months (and like the 5th time in years).

I found a simple recipe off my Pinterest board and adapted it (really chefing it up).

I used oatbran since I didn’t have oats, 1 scoop of protein powder (Sunwarrior Vanilla, 1 scoop = 70 calories vs. her 100 for 1/2) & omitted the stevia (trying to cut out the sugar / sugar substitute s where I can!).

Clearly these look nothing like Dashing Dish’s crepes. These were straight up pancakes and they were yummy. Thick and cakey.

Growing up I used to fear pancakes at slumber parties and such since it was carbs and hard to calculate, usually a serving surpassed my allocation and what slumber party breakfast has perfect servings??

So I steered away from them. And I never got syrup – not the real kind anyways. Though I wasn’t much for the fake stuff either and it wasn’t an option at my dad’s house …. a teeny tiny bit of honey was all I got. Oddly I never got into butter and jam was equally threatening. So I learned to like pancakes dry.

Since these were so thick I didn’t do the yogurt filling, plus I just wasn’t craving it. Perhaps one day I’ll look up a no-sugar glaze type recipe (any suggestions??) to go with it.

This morning I made them again! Before coffee and before even putting my contacts in (that might be considered a fire hazard)! I tossed in some of the fresh cherries that I’ve been obsessing over this summer. Out of kitchen tools I never thought I’d need – I definitely would have made use with a cherry pitter!

Ignore the coffee grounds on the counter … contacts still weren’t in yet.

So what else made  it a Saturday of firsts?

Finally having a coffee date with a friend who lives a block below me…..and plotting Color Run logistics.

Meeting a friend’s boyfriend finally – love when I get to meet the person behind all the stories.

Meeting new babysitting charges …. these kids are serious soccer players !

Not having to get on a bus and letting plans evolve naturally   – love when it all links up together!

4th Fun

Look I made something! Yes, it’s a simple summer fruit salad but I was highly proud of my efforts. I even had mint randomly in my fridge (what possessed me to buy it – I have no clue). By the way, that package of cherries was the best I’ve ever had – I’ll probably be headed back to the store tomorrow to get more. It also made me wish I had a cherry pitter. Inspired by this tip I used a straw … that lasted for about 5 cherries.  Silly thing is, I have chopsticks that would have worked. Oh well, it left more for me to eat.

I brought the fruit to a BBQ in Brooklyn … melted before getting on the subway but was able to pull myself together. Sort of.  Toto, we are most definitely in Williamsburg, pretty sure my blue floral H&M dress and I were not hip enough for this party. It was also probably a good thing that my hair was in a topnot because the lack of a haircut in over a year would probably given all of those hair stylists a heart attack.  But I love meeting new people and it was good to catch up with my cousin.

Plus I was introduced to this amazing invention …. how did I not know about this?

It will be bought today. And it better work.

Wednesday was a prescribed rest day. Apparently it was a sleep in day too as I totally ignored my alarms and slept until past 10am. When I was out getting  fruit I saw people out for their run and got a little sad – I felt left out that I wasn’t getting a workout in. But then I remembered that I did two yoga classes and 4 miles the day before …. a rest day was more than ok.  What wasn’t ok to skip was foam rolling, my right hamstring & glute has been adding up (oh yay, another one to add to the injury list) and while I’m not too sure where it came from I would like to make it go away….asap. So I got patriotic with my stick and a little massage therapy, also paying plenty of attention to my calves.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th!

{weekend recap} : Crazytown

Some how starting Friday Crazytown became my new expression.

Maybe it was because despite my not believing all the hype of the hurricane, I started to take it a little more serious when the city went on shut down.

Maybe it was the fact that all Friday  at work I was coordinating [read: begging, pleading, scheduling, assigning] a team to come in on Saturday ….and how they would get home after public transportation was shut down.

Maybe it was the fact that I was still doing so at 10:30pm on Friday.

Or maybe it was the line for check out at Food Emporium Saturday morning after I just made it to Bed Bath & Beyond {where I then decided that I would live off PB sandwiches should I get stuck in my apartment …and then realized that was nothing new…

”]

It could have been considered crazytown that I cooked a proper dinner. And it was pasta. Pretty sure I had that box of pasta {opened} since I first moved into the city…almost 3 years ago. I added frozen veggies, sunflower seeds & feta. It was fancy. And yummy. It had many flavors….forgot what that was like.

And it was crazytown good that I continued my ABC Family hulu adventure & jumped on the Greek bandwagon ….watching the first entire season.

My favorite part may have when Cappie referenced Amelia Bedelia
