Pity Party ends….time to get colored!!

I had my appointment with my orthopedic doctor on Monday.

I had my MRI on Friday.

Between Monday – Friday there was no running. There was no cardio. Heck, there wasn’t even strength training, not enough foam rolling and only two yoga classes.

The first by doctors orders, the second by judgement call and the rest ….. well I was feeling lost & sorry for myself

It was a gradual build and by Friday I threw myself the ultimate pity party while my MRI appointment turned into a 3 hour process.

Requested to be there by 2pm, scheduled for 2:30, not seen until 4:20, out by 5:30. I was not impressed.

I’m a patient person – especially when it comes to customer service. I know that the fact that it was a Friday afternoon/end of day, a hospital and had numerous phone calls to set up the appointment, that it all should have pointed to a major delay.

But I was tired. And cranky.  I hadn’t slept well the night before (something about my mind working itself up over the thought of not running and losing endurance or a never-ending injury … or both) and by the afternoon I needed a nap. Poor me, had to sit and wait. By 3:15 I finally asked when I might be seen – something I never do. For some reason this required the manager to come out to update me – 25 minutes. This gave me a set time to get up and move and get something to drink, ok I could handle it. I got back in 23 minutes …… to find my self sitting and waiting (there weren’t many other patients and all were going in & out before me) until it was 4:15 and near tears (of exhaustion and crankiness….like a 4-year-old) I inquired once again. Which brought back the manager. Meanwhile I had been all updated on the administrative staff’s weekend plans  – one was house sitting her sister’s apartment and planning to make a night in the city out of it.

Finally Mr. Manager brought me in. I had developed a nice headache during my quick break but declined my mom’s suggestion of Tylenol when I whined …..I forgot that MRIs are loud.  And confining….can’t imagine needing something done above the waist! And cold!! I didn’t have to worry about my legs itching because they were too cold to feel.

So I practiced yoga breathing, tried to avoid the what-if game regarding marathon training and dosed off. I was less than pleased when Mr. Manager came in to tell me that the machine went off-line and it would be another 13 minutes (I promise from now on I will try really really hard not to say “1 second” “1 minute” when it clearly wont be ! I’ll stick with the elusive “just a moment”).

This all led to capping of the week-long pity party with finishing of a jar of TJ’s Cookie Butter for dinner (yes, I said last time never again ….. #fail! Not even 36 hours…)  and watching Saved by the Bell on Netflix.

Oh Zach.

It felt weird not to be prepping for a long run on Saturday.  I was sad that I wouldn’t be out there catching up with Jackie and seeing if moving my lantus before my run would help my bloodsugars.

Slowly transitioning out of pity week, I looked forward to catching up with friends on Saturday and the Color Run (walk) on Sunday …. still managed to get my early morning group run event in …sort of.

One of the SBTB episodes was where Lisa wins the dance contest with a sprained ankle ….. I told one of my friends that we’d be doing “The Sprain” down the Color Run course.

Recaps to come of Summer Saturday firsts  and  Getting Colored!

Your turn:

Have you had to skip a run recently?

What do you indulge in during a pity party ?

Watch any old TV shows on Netflix lately?

Dear (left) kneecap,

Dear (left) kneecap,

I’m sorry. Ever since that night (May 17th I believe)  in soccer when I slammed in the guy on the team, smashing you in to a shin guard or body part, you have taken quite the beating. It seems like there’s a gravitational pull to knocking you against something.

The moment it first happen I felt a sense of “oh crap what did I do?” because there were only a few games left and my main goal was to end the season injury free, ready for marathon training. While there was some intense throbbing you let me finish out the game (feeling tough might I add). I was in physical therapy at the time and in between games I thought about getting a knee pad to protect you – PT didn’t think it was a silly idea.

    though I kind of wish I had these :  {there’s such things as crawling knee pads??}

Boy was my outfit silly, hot pink compression sleeves, black knee pad & either yoga shorts or one time bright blue compression shorts (that was a sexy outfit).

Yes, one of those annoying self portraits … mostly for the vibrant one on the left…yes that is what I wore to soccer one night (our team shirt was the same blue color) + the knee pad.

But it seems I need the knee pad even more off the field. I really did a number Memorial Day Weekend. You were still pretty painful, nothing like the usual knee pain – this had nothing to do with tendons and all about knee cap. I was out with friends on a boat (yay!) weary of any knee slapping – and trusted me – I moved hands many times as we were all squished in cars. Speaking of cars: the time we snuck a 5th person into a cab and she rested right on you – sorry about that, you weren’t too happy. Anyways, back to MDW, we were doing good until we stopped for lunch. As I climbed onto the dock I managed to slam you straight into the side of the boat. The little girl in front of me prevented me from some serious explicits. I made sure to get a cup of ice straight away at the bar, which wasn’t awkward at all, no not at all.

My physical therapist called me a klutz – he’s right. I have proceeded to hit you with my laptop numerous times, knock you into the bathroom wall, hit you on bathroom cabinet, as well as a few other corners. Never the right knee, oh no, only you, so that you are still bruised and have a lump after months.

Despite all that – thank youthankyouthank you for not interfering with my running! I have the rest of my knee ( and hip and groin and hip flexor and IT band to deal with …wow left side, really??) to deal with.

I promise to keep on icing you (you get more love the rest above when it comes to icing/heating) and wearing the knee pad for yoga…I know we’re still trying to figure out all those lunges but my hip flexor really needs them. I’m ok with holding off on crow pose.

Look, I’ve even started to use the knee pad as a mat holder so that I wouldn’t forget it. Pretty nifty of me if I do say so myself. And why yes, that is my own little PT corner.

So I’m sorry left knee cap, I really really don’t mean to be beating you up. Let’s work together to get healed up pretty soon ok?

4th Fun

Look I made something! Yes, it’s a simple summer fruit salad but I was highly proud of my efforts. I even had mint randomly in my fridge (what possessed me to buy it – I have no clue). By the way, that package of cherries was the best I’ve ever had – I’ll probably be headed back to the store tomorrow to get more. It also made me wish I had a cherry pitter. Inspired by this tip I used a straw … that lasted for about 5 cherries.  Silly thing is, I have chopsticks that would have worked. Oh well, it left more for me to eat.

I brought the fruit to a BBQ in Brooklyn … melted before getting on the subway but was able to pull myself together. Sort of.  Toto, we are most definitely in Williamsburg, pretty sure my blue floral H&M dress and I were not hip enough for this party. It was also probably a good thing that my hair was in a topnot because the lack of a haircut in over a year would probably given all of those hair stylists a heart attack.  But I love meeting new people and it was good to catch up with my cousin.

Plus I was introduced to this amazing invention …. how did I not know about this?

It will be bought today. And it better work.

Wednesday was a prescribed rest day. Apparently it was a sleep in day too as I totally ignored my alarms and slept until past 10am. When I was out getting  fruit I saw people out for their run and got a little sad – I felt left out that I wasn’t getting a workout in. But then I remembered that I did two yoga classes and 4 miles the day before …. a rest day was more than ok.  What wasn’t ok to skip was foam rolling, my right hamstring & glute has been adding up (oh yay, another one to add to the injury list) and while I’m not too sure where it came from I would like to make it go away….asap. So I got patriotic with my stick and a little massage therapy, also paying plenty of attention to my calves.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th!

Run: 5/28

1st training run!!

Goal: 3 miles

Intensity: went faster than expected. Not only did I not have water on me but I had very little to drink that day & had been out in the sun all day.

Path: late night, stuck to the sidewalks and did a loop around my neighborhood

Injuries: hip went for an overall achy-ness – going into the glutes. rebanged up my knee that day. right shin splits (didn’t wear sleeves).

PT: 6/1

Today we went for the heat on my hip.

I have all sorts of ice packs in the freezer but it’s harder for me to come up with a heat pack – especially with no microwave. I have one of those old school water bottles. So usually I’m just too lazy – plus lately I’ve been plenty hot with out them.

So I came up with a new theory: as long as I’m not sweating standing still – heat pack before workouts. This goes for hip & quads. Shins & knee can stick with the ice.

That is the lovely knee (or elbow if I decide to take up rollerblading) pad that I rocked at soccer. After banging up my knee at the last game I was a little frightened of either another blast or being overly conservative to prevent impact. I joked about rigging up some sort of knee pad after having trouble in yoga & physical therapy. After taking another blow to it by hitting it while getting off a boat (I was fine during softball & go-karting … go figure), it was confirmed … and I didn’t feel so silly when my physical therapist agreed. Something about pooling blood and busted knee caps told me not to take chances. And when he asked if I was a klutz I told him he should as my downstairs neighbor.

So after yoga (in which my hamstrings loved the modified lunges) I raced to Modell’s to search for the cheapest, basic knee pad. Then I discovered running in volleyball knee pads was only going to add to my awkwardness/ungracefulness. So I went with the real deal.  Wore them during yoga today too.

To make them even sexier – I was wearing my bright blue compression shorts & hot pink compression calf sleeves.
