{Weekend Recap} : Actively Eating & Outdoor Fun

  Saturday morning started off bright & early at 8am. It was my third year doing the EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women in honor of a friend’s mom.  While there were a few runners in our group, the rest of us took the opportunity to slow down to a casual stroll and chat.

We ended it with the annual BBQ which included “flip flip scrabble cup” and break out dance routines :

After picking out horses (I took Take Charge Indy – it sounded powerful….and I had 2 seconds to decide)  I switched from Derby to Cinco de Mayo :

Pinata Baseball on the rooftop leaded to jumping pictures … we weren’t very good at them.  Someone made delicious cupcakes with lemon zest – perfect recovery fuel for a < 3.1 mile walk.

Sunday was the first UGS/Athelta group run of the Spring season. Over 90 girls showed up!! I recognized some faces from the fall and there were a ton of new ones. I was really impressed with how the event was organized and even noticed little ways they improved from last year (raffle ticket inside of the goody bag? Brilliant! Sometimes it’s the simplest things).

I was hesitant at first to even go because of my hip & all the silly injuries but figured I could stick with the beginners and always drop down to walkers. With indirect peer pressure I ended up jumping in the intermediate group at the last-minute – a loose estimate of 9:30 min mile.

There was so many of us that even the intermediate group broke down into 3 groups. I ended up running with 5 girls and by the end started dragging in the bag – hip wasn’t too happy,  not to mention I was feeling the few weeks off from any cardio. But it was a good run & I’m glad I went.  During the group stretch I stepped away to do a blood test … so skipped stretching my first run back – way to go for injury prevention.

RunKeeper lied again so I didn’t get stats but we ran for 39:40 minutes and I think the coach said 10:15 min mile pace … something between 3.5 – 4 miles.

I then rushed to met a friend for brunch at Elmo‘s, shopping & The High Line.

Living in the UES I don’t visit it often and it was cool to see how much it’s expanded since I last went. Need to venture over there more often.

I over-corrected for brunch and ended up going low as we were heading back …which totally calls for 16 Handles. I tried the Greek Honey Yogurt flavor  – I’ll be sticking to Birthday Cake (my fav) & Blueberry (that makes it healthier right?).

Lots of friends, activities & carbs – the perfect weekend.

{weekend wrap-up} : Summer Streets, a #PDR & The Help

I finally ran Summer Streets! And boy did I run. 10 miles. That would make it the longest distance for me yet.

Not only did I PDR it, I also started out pretty strong getting back under the 10m/m.

Right from the start I was running along with a girl who would continue to be a pacer for me. It wasn’t a race, it wasn’t a competition, it was just support & motivation …. that she had no idea she was providing. I took a walking break after I hit a 5k mark, I said goodbye in my head to runner girl (no, that’s not creepy. not at all) and slowed down. But after being surrounded by bikers I soon found groups & pairs of runners passing me.  As they went past, I realized I wanted to be there with them. Not because I was competitive that they were getting ahead but because I was motivated by them. Running has almost always been a solitary activity for me. I don’t run in Central Park and only part of my route is along the East River. I haven’t tried a running club yet or meet ups and don’t run with friends. There’s been a few times when I’ve fallen in step with someone running the same blocks as me….and  I usually don’t like it.

But I was reminded on Saturday that being surrounded by other runners is good for me. It pushes me, encourages me …and makes it more fun. I love fitness classes, promotional activities and organized events, so why don’t I mix this in with my running? Perhaps it’s time to look into a running group ? They have ones for people who haven’t fully come back down into the under 10m/m speed right??

And since I seem to be seeing a lot of movies lately, after anxiously awaiting I saw The Help. I read the book a while back, shortly before they announced they were doing a movie. I loved both! Yes, the movie didn’t include all the points of the book (do they ever) but they didn’t change it either and I thought that they really brought personalities to the characters. I love Emma Stone (as seen by last weeks movie choice…) and was thrilled they made her Skeeter.

{weekend wrap-up}: Movies &Target

You’re welcome.

Yeah, you should go see this movie.

No seriously. I didn’t have high expectations but love Emma Stone [so excited for The Help!!] & Ryan Gosling [yes, even with clothes on]. I laughed. Like a lot. It’s usually hard for me to sit back & relax and enjoy a movie …. I analyze too much. This one caught me by surprise and had a lot of great one liners.

Other highlights of the weekend included this:

Don’t laugh.

Ask any of my friends, Target is high on my list of happy places and I’ve had serious withdrawals since moving to the city. A visit home means a visit to Target. I once even have a friend offer to include that in my trip to see her. Don’t ask me to explain it, I just have this undying love of the pretty bright lights of Target.

I finally ventured to Harlem to check it out, after seeing that it was much close than I thought when I ran past it a few weeks ago [ you should have seen my face, I came to a halt when I saw the sig].

So while no big adventures, it’s one of those things that instead of continuously  talking about how I want to go/do – I  can cross it off the list.

And as you’ll note, no runs…or any exercise…but more on that later.
