4th Fun

Look I made something! Yes, it’s a simple summer fruit salad but I was highly proud of my efforts. I even had mint randomly in my fridge (what possessed me to buy it – I have no clue). By the way, that package of cherries was the best I’ve ever had – I’ll probably be headed back to the store tomorrow to get more. It also made me wish I had a cherry pitter. Inspired by this tip I used a straw … that lasted for about 5 cherries.  Silly thing is, I have chopsticks that would have worked. Oh well, it left more for me to eat.

I brought the fruit to a BBQ in Brooklyn … melted before getting on the subway but was able to pull myself together. Sort of.  Toto, we are most definitely in Williamsburg, pretty sure my blue floral H&M dress and I were not hip enough for this party. It was also probably a good thing that my hair was in a topnot because the lack of a haircut in over a year would probably given all of those hair stylists a heart attack.  But I love meeting new people and it was good to catch up with my cousin.

Plus I was introduced to this amazing invention …. how did I not know about this?

It will be bought today. And it better work.

Wednesday was a prescribed rest day. Apparently it was a sleep in day too as I totally ignored my alarms and slept until past 10am. When I was out getting  fruit I saw people out for their run and got a little sad – I felt left out that I wasn’t getting a workout in. But then I remembered that I did two yoga classes and 4 miles the day before …. a rest day was more than ok.  What wasn’t ok to skip was foam rolling, my right hamstring & glute has been adding up (oh yay, another one to add to the injury list) and while I’m not too sure where it came from I would like to make it go away….asap. So I got patriotic with my stick and a little massage therapy, also paying plenty of attention to my calves.

Hope you had a wonderful 4th!

Is your refrigerator running?

i will not ask where january went. i will not ask where january went. i will not ask where january went. I will not ask where january went. i will not ask where january went.

It’s February! And I just wore a t-shirt on my night run. #loveit

This morning started off a little rough – once I saw it was rainy out I wussed out of my morning run knowing it was going to be a challenge to follow through this evening.

Than I discovered my fridge decided to stop working over night. Ice cube trays were water. So after an hour of figuring out how to be an adult & handle it … and leaving a voicemail with my super, I headed to the bodega to get 5 bags of ice which I crammed into the freezer with the already (no longer) frozen veggies & rescued my insulin & all the dairy including all the Chobani I just stocked up on. Important things people!

The ice was still ice and the yogurt was still cold this evening so I figured I’m going back to the old age & utilizing an icebox. I hope I don’t get food poisoning.

Starving when I got home, an almost dead iPhone and a blood-sugar that would need a boost for a run … it was easy to talk myself out of it. But I knew I would be mad at myself, especially after last week when so many off-set plans were out of my control, so I laced up the moment there was a break in my excuses.

{pin}

And than went out and dominated my run.

2 miles were on the plan. I came up 1/2 mile short yesterday so I knew I wanted to tack that on if not go for 3 (there was a time when 3 was the norm).

This time when RunKeeper told me I was pulling under 10 min miles I believed it:

Funny I had just pinned this from Women’s Running

{pin}

and once I knew it was possible all I could think of was keeping it under 9:20 …. I did 2.95 miles (yeah that missing .05 hurts) in 27:19 – average 9:15. I could have strongly rounded it off at 3 – I need to go back & study my routes apparently – especially since  3 miles are on the plan for tomorrow morning.

Oh and I most definitely know how to kick my own butt – my legs are feeling Monday nights  routine. Hopefully I can put together an equally good one for my quads tomorrow night.

This perspective on Be Nice on the Internet week.

I haven’t been to Texas (Austin #2 on my list) but Rachel’s description of Texas being one big crazy family has me wanting to make a stop in Houston.

 I’m loving the song on this winter commercial, but my recent stalking fashion blogger’s archives has me nostalgic for this video summertime

I pulled out my blender for the first time since summer on Monday – and in perfect time b/c I’m now in love with this Cinnamon Oatmeal Smoothie recipe from Eating Bird Food

I’m trying the sparkles at work look as it’s my best-friend-at-work’s birthday today & one of my co-worker’s last days … tonight is filled with some celebrating.

Pass me the ball

I played soccer from 7 – 12 grade and intramural in 5th & 6th.

I spent a lot of time on the bench.

I broke my arm in 7th grade by “tripping over the soccer ball”
(it was wet, I went to pull the ball back & I went forward).
I strained my MCL in 12th grade
(I shouldn’t have even been in the game, it was the last 10 min & I had been out sick from practice and it was one of our last games. I was turning to catch up with a girl that blew past me headed to the goal)

A friend & old teammate suggested a league she had joined. Last year I couldn’t fit it in with work but with later games this season I decided to go for it. A little nervous of how competitive / all-star filled it would be , my theory was she saw me in my best attempts & struggles so how bad could it be. Plus I could always just be the benchwarmer for the league.

So when the email went out with details for the first game (last night) & my friend mentioned she couldn’t go my instant reaction:

wait whatttt??? I have to go alone??? I, but, oh no, awkward.

But I couldn’t back out. Plus I’m 25, not going just because a friend wasn’t going – lame.

So I went. Slightly petrified. And definitely feeling awkward.

But guess what? No major blunders, no injuries & a some fun!

Plus we won.

So with late games, I thought that definitely ruled out attempts at Wednesday morning gym sessions.

It wasn’t the later bedtime that ruined it – a 4am low bloodsugar killed that idea on its own. 5:30 rolled around and 1/2 still feeling woozy & 1/2 sleeping led to a lot of snooze button hitting. It’s going to be a little tricky figuring out how to balance insulin, uncontrolled activity & dinner/no dinner situation.

{this would be totally dangerous for me and not be aligned with my #11 goal for 2012 }

The one #success was that I snuck in one round of this :

{pin}

Recently discovered that I can save a “pin” to my iPhone camera – pulling it up at the gym even with no service. #awesome

Still giving thanks

Some times it’s easiest to focus on what’s not going the ideal way.
I found out last week that my 11/11/11 wish didn’t come true.
Blood sugars are a mess & we’re just entering the holiday craze.
Exercise is weak.

– But Thanksgiving is a reminder to let all of those things go and focus on the good things that fill my life. –

{pin}

A few things I’m thankful for:

1. Roasted Brussel Sprouts. I love ’em. Should enjoy them more.

2. My wonderful, amazing friends. Most of my closest friends live outside NYC and come from various points in my life but no matter what,we’re there for each other.

3. Black dresses + boots. This is my new travel uniform.

4. The ability to run. Sometime not without pain or trouble but with full capability.
5. Coffee. Always
6. Fro-yo. Especially the 16-Handle birthday cake, pumpkin spice & apple pie variety

7. Sunshine. It makes me happy.

8. My diabetes.  Yes that’s right. Sometimes it sucks (especially recently) but out of all the things in life, I’m glad I’m facing a challenge that is well-recognized and has plenty of support in research. It could be worse. It could always be worse.

9. Living in NYC. It’s not always easy or relaxing but it’s empowering & eventful.

10. Chocolate. I don’t understand people who don’t like chocolate.

11. The Internet – what would I do without the internet?

12. My family. We may all be growing older & far apart but it is the meaning of unconditional love & support.
13. Pinterest. I’m addicted. It makes me happy.
14. Blogs. I have learned so much from stalking reading blogs – from the authors, the community & myself.
15. My independence. Not just in the American freedom way but in the way that I was raised and allowed to make my own choices & judgements.

 {pinterest}

It’s easy to take these things plus more for granted. Part of the independence + diabetes mix makes me very self-focused. It’s nice to take a step away from my current happenings, good & bad, and take a look around.
